20 WEEK ABORTION BAN REMAINS

One part of the new abortion restrictions in Texas has gone into effect.  Many of the restrictions were struck down Monday and the Texas Attorney General’s office is appealing that ruling.  The ban on abortions after 20 weeks was not and is now in effect.

This ban only affects a small percentage of abortions in Texas but abortion rights advocates  says the new restriction will mean women who learn late about serious birth defects or face life-threatening conditions themselves no longer will have the option to terminate the pregnancy.  Previously abortions could be performed up to 24 weeks, except to save the life of the mother.

Attorney General Greg Abbott is appealing a federal judge’s ruling Monday to the 5th Court of Appeals in New Orleans, that struck down a provision requiring abortion providing doctors have admitting privileges in a hospital within thirty miles and restrictions on abortion inducing drugs.
