AUSTIN COUNTY JAIL REOPENS

The Austin County jail has been reopened.

The Sealy News reports that inmates are moving in as soon as they are transported back from the Fort Bend County Jail.

Austin County Sheriff Jack Brandes hired five new jailers after the Austin County commissioners’ court approved an increase to jailers’ salaries.

He also enlisted the help of two deputies who came off patrol so he could open the new addition and inmates could start returning.

A regular civilian jailer’s salary has increased from $28,500 to $31,500, and a deputy jailer’s salary has increased from $31,900 to $35,000.

Austin County Judge Carolyn Bilski referred to recent news of overcrowding at the Montgomery County Jail saying Austin County is not alone on this issue.

Bilski suggested that further distinctions be made between crimes that deserve jail time and those that might need an alternative punishment to help prevent overcrowding.
