BLINN INDUCTS NEW HALL MEMBERS

  

Blinn College has four new members of its Hall of Honor. 

The quartet was inducted into the Hall at Saturday’s Blinn Hall of Honor Luncheon.

Charles W. Schwartz
Charles W. Schwartz

Among this year’s honorees is Charles W. Schwartz.  Schwartz is the son for former Blinn president and former Mayor of Brenham, Walter Schwartz.  Charles Schwartz is the former chairman of the State Bar of Texas and was recently appointed to the Board of Regents of Texas A&M.  Schwartz was a member of the Blinn College class of 1973.

Also inducted into the Hall is 1964 graduate Terry Tottenham.  Tottenham has also served as the president of the Texas State Bar.  He has served on the State Bar’s Board of Directors as Chair of the Health Law Section and Chair of the Litigation Section.  He also created a national trial skills training program for public service lawyers.

Nathan Wnkelmann
Nathan Wnkelmann

1975 graduate Nathan Winkelmann was also inducted.  Winkelmann, a native of New Wedham, was a football All-American  for the Buccaneers who went on to the food service business.  He founded Buccaneer Food Store which eventually led to Nathan’s Barbeque—one of the most successful restaurants in Brenham.  He served as president of the Alumni Lettermen Association and is currently serving on the Blinn Foundation board.

Janis Sweed

Former instructor and coach Janis Sneed is the fourth inductee.  In 1970
Sneed became co-advisor to the national honor fraternity Phi theta Kappa.  Under the leadership of Sneed and Robert Giles, the local chapter was nationally ranked for 20 consecutive years.  In 1986 she was recognized nationally as the fraternity’s Most Distinguished Adviser.

The Blinn alumni also recognized District-13 State Representative Lois Kolkhorst as Person of the Year. As the Chair of the House Committee on Public Health, Kolkhorst oversees the state’s health care system.  She’s also a member of the House Committee on County Affairs and served for six years on the House Appropriations Committee.  She has also been a strong advocate for education issues.

The 10th Annual Ex-Students Association luncheon was held as part of the 2013 Blinn Homecoming activities, Saturday at the Blinn Student Center.
