BLINN PROGRAM HELPS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MAKE TRANSITION TO COLLEGE

  

Mary Barnes Tilley, the director of the Blinn College Quality Enhancement Program told the Blinn Board of Trustees at last (Tuesday) night’s meeting, that learning communities under the program is part of Blinn’s commitment to help students make the transition from high school to college.  Dr. Tilley told the Board  that QEP process develops an important element of their institutional mission, addressing a well defined, focused topic and issued related  to enhance student learning.

She identified four high enrollment courses, History, Biology, English and Math, in which first year students have had a lower success rate than the average Blinn student.  Tilley says as part of the QEP, learning communities will be created with students taking two of those four courses, plus a success course that teaches students about diverse career opportunities as well as the College’s many learning resources.

Tilley said “Research suggests that learning communities have the best results in improvement student success and retention rate compared to other institutions.
