BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL ISSUES BONDS FOR FD, ANIMAL SHELTER AND LIBRARY. DELAYS SIMON THEATER DISCUSSIONS
The Brenham City Council intends to issue $4.1 million in certificates of obligation to pay for the acquisition of land for a fire station, the purchase of two fire trucks and a pumper, the construction of a new animal shelter and the renovations at the Nancy Carol Roberts Library in a decision made at (Thursday’s ) meeting.
City Financial Advisory Gary Kimball of Certified Public Finance said this was the right time to issue these bonds because the banks were not being ‘aggressive’ in the issuance of bonds.
The Brenham City Council locked in a price for the fire trucks at a meeting several months ago, in anticipation of changes in the bond market. The City is also ready to build a new animal shelter next to the police station. While both public and private funding will be used to construct the shelter, the bonds will help fund the public funding.
The bonds will also help pay for the renovations of the Nancy Carol Roberts Library.
The City Council was going to have a discussion on the progress of the Simon Theater Project at today’s (Thursday’s) meeting but City Manager Terry Roberts said the Main Street Historical Society informed him before the meeting that they needed more time to prepare their report. The report should be ready for the next City Council meeting on April 24th.

I do not believe the Fortnightly Club is aware that the proposed library renovation that we are being asked to help fund is part of a bond issue that we will share with an animal shelter.
I am responsible for my own pet but that animal shelter would better funded by the licenses and fines against people who do not spay/neuter or contain their pets. I do not think the library should share a bond issue with a “dog house”.
