BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL LOOKS AT TXDOT PROPOSAL FOR ROAD OWNERSHIP AND MAINTENANCE
The Brenham City Council took a good look at a proposal from the Texas Department of Transportation that would have the city maintain and own the portion of FM 389 that runs through the city limits at today’s (Thursday’s) meeting.
City Engineer Grant Lischka told the City Council that, under the proposal, the city street crews would be taking care of 389 as it becomes Prairie Lea from U.S. 290 to College Avenue and then from Prairie Lea Street to highway 36 or Day Street. The city maintenance would continue out to FM 332. Lischka says this portion is currently maintained by TxDot. Lischka says that this may well work to the benefit of the city but it would also add two miles of road maintenance for the city. He told the Council TxDOT would then offer to upgrade the section outside 290 to a curb and gutter, two lane center lane section.
Chad Bohne of TxDot said further that the Turn Back program was instituted about six months ago.
If the proposal is accepted the total miles of roads that the city maintains would be 82 miles.
Chad Bohne, a TxDot District Engineer told the Council that this is part of the Turn Back Program that would help cities plan for the future in road maintenance.
Lischka said the city staff wanted the City Council’s input on the proposal.
