BRENHAM FD SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

Due to declining numbers, the Brenham Fire Department is actively recruiting volunteers.

The local department, like others around the country, is seeing the number of volunteers steadily declining.  Currently, there are 35 local volunteers, which is 15 below its maximum and well below its average of 40-45.

Fire Chief Ricky Boeker tells the weekend edition of the Brenham Banner Press that many volunteer-dependent organizations are facing increasing competition from time.

Boeker says there are so many different things going on these days, that most people just don’t have time to volunteer.

But he also says the importance of volunteers can’t be overstated.

Greg Niensted, who is helping the department recruit new volunteers, says the department has scheduled two 16-week training programs a year.

The department is currently taking applications for volunteers. The applications will be reviewed by the end of May, and testing will be held, with the training program likely to begin in July.

Anyone interested can stop by the fire department at 101 N. Chappell Hill St. weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. or call 337-7300.
