BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD HEARS NEW HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The new high school graduation requirements are giving students more flexibility to those who don’t ‘necessarily go on to college,’ according to Bonnie Brinkmeyer, the Brenham School District’s Coordinator for Instructional Services at last (Tuesday) night’s meeting of the Brenham School board at Brenham High School.

Brinkmeyer, along with Brenham High School Principal Steve Skrla outlined the new requirements to the board.

Brinkmeyer received applause when she reported that after House Bill Five, the number of standardized tests required for high school graduation had been reduced from 15 to 5.  She also said students can choose from four ‘endorsements’ or specified courses to help students get through high school.

The requirements have students take four credits from the areas of arts and humanities, business and industry, public service, multidisciplinary  or STEM, science, technology, engineering and math.

This along with the foundation courses, can allow students to graduate with 26 credits.

Brenham High School Principal Steve Skrla outlined the new course schedule at the high school.  He told the board that the current schedule of seven periods, with students attending each class every day, has shown a decrease in students failing courses.

He also said the new schedule means students have 32 additional days of instruction through the year.

Skrla and Brinkmeyer both noted that the State Board of Education still needs to give its final approval of the new requirements when they meet next week.
