BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD TO LOOK AT STAAR SCORES

The Brenham school board should get a much clearer idea on how well students in the district did on the State of Texas Assessment of Readiness test in the recently finished school year when they meet Monday evening at Brenham High School.

Bonnie Brinkmeyer, the Brenham School District’s Coordinator for Curriculum and Accountability has been reviewing the district’s scores since the preliminary statewide results were released at the end of May, and she is expected to review those results during Monday’s school board meeting.

Texas Education Agency officials described the results  as relatively stable, compared with recent years.

State Education Commissioner Michael Williams said however, the reading scores were troubling and said further test data shows that students need help in spite of recent and ongoing criticism of the exams.

The statewide scores showed that seventh graders scored four points lower than they did last year.

There were some improvements statewide in math.  These exams were given in the fall.

Work on the renovation of the Brenham Middle School and the construction of the new Alton Elementary School is well on the way to final completion.  The board will get one more update on those projects during Monday’s meeting.

The board is expected to approve the purchase of playground equipment for the new Alton Elementary School.

The Brenham Middle School underwent a $12 million renovation and should be ready fo rthe first day of school in August.
