BRENHAM TENNIS PERFORMS WELL AT DISTRICT TOURNEY

The Brenham High School Tennis team competed in the District 18/4A Tournament Wednesday at Walden racquet club.

In boys singles freshman Andrew Trostle won his first round against Caney Creek 6-4, 6-2. Then lost to Willis.  Coach Roy Thibodeaux says, “Andrew did a great job winning his first round match in his district tournament debut. He gained a lot of experience and that will prove valuable in the years to come.”

In girls singles Ashley Bentke won her first round match against Waller 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).  According to Thibodeaux, “She rolled through the first set, and then her opponent started playing better but Ashley didn't give up and held her composure winning the second set in a tie-breaker. “  Bentke lost to Montgomery in the next round.

In Boys doubles the team of Daniel Ward and Luke Henkhaus won a tough first round match against Magnolia 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.  Thibodeaux praised the duo, “They went the distance going 3 sets and pulled out an awesome win. They played great when they needed it the most and I could not be more proud of them.”  They lost to the #1 seeded Montgomery team in the next round.

In girls doubles the team of Valeria Sanchez and Karlie Weidemann won their first round match against Willis 6-3, 6-2. “They played a solid match and really hit some great shots,” said Thibodeaux.  “Consistency was the key for them and with Val being a senior this was a great win for her to share with her teammate.”  The pair lost to the #2 seeded team from Montgomery in the next round.

In mixed doubles Chase Martin and Brennan Upchurch won a first round match against Bryan Rudder 6-3, 6-2. Thibodaux says, “They have been getting better as a team each week and it really showed during this tournament. Chase's leadership as senior and his experience really came through.”  In the next round they lost to the #1 seeded team from Montgomery.

Thibodeaux says says he’s extremely satisfied by the way the tennis team played this year.  “They never give up and play with integrity all while representing our school and community in a very positive manner.  We have a lot of young talent and upper classmen available next year and I'm excited about the future of Brenham tennis.”
