The Buccaneers’ shot missed, and Angelina escaped with a 79-78 victory.

The last-second shot attempt came after the Bucs capped a comeback in the second half after trailing 43-34 at halftime.

“We missed a lot of chippy shots,” Blinn (13-7, 4-6 Region XIV) coach Scott Schumacher said. “We couldn’t convert underneath. Angelina had a big front line, so that played a big part of it.”

After Blinn rallied to tie the score at 50 with 10 minutes to play in the second half, Angelina sparked a 16-3 run. Though Blinn trailed 66-53, the Bucs rallied to pull it to a point, 79-78, off two Lionheart Leslie free throws with 26 seconds to play.

“With about five minutes to play during a timeout we told the guys that if they kept playing like they were, the game would come down to the final 30 seconds,” Schumacher said. “Sure enough, it did.”

Macari Brooks scored a team-high 24 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Leslie scored 12 points, and Eric Ross grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Bucs outrebounded Angelina 46-34.

“I thought the guys played a terrific second half,” Schumacher said. “They kept playing the whole way and kept fighting back.”
