Buccaneers top Cisco in overtime

Shunta Nevitt found herself wide open at the top of the left wing. She took a pass and nailed a 3-pointer that helped the Blinn women’s basketball team escape the Blinn P.E. Building with a win Saturday.

“That was a great shot,” Blinn (3-2) coach Jeff Jenkins said. “She’s been playing really well.”

Nevitt’s three couldn’t have come at a better time as the Lady Wranglers had cut Blinn’s lead to 77-75 with 1:33 remaining in the extra period.

All game, Cisco had negated Blinn’s runs by forcing turnovers and getting ample second-chance opportunities on offense. With less than two seconds remaining in regulation, Cisco completed its comeback.

Point guard Samira Rodriguez took a prayer shot near the free throw line as time expired and banked in the basket to tie the game 72-72.

But as they were all game, the Bucs stayed calm.

Shakera Barnes hit 1 of 2 free throws to start the extra period, and sophomores Fatima Adams and Tierra Tucker hit baskets to extend that lead.

The Bucs got 24 points from Adams, and Nevitt dropped another 14.

Following Nevitt’s three at the 1:33 mark, Barnes, who finished with 12 points, hit two free throws that iced the victory.

“I thought most of the night we played hard,” Jenkins said. “This is the hardest we’ve played all season.”

Neither team found much offense in the first half as the Bucs entered the locker room ahead 27-26.

Though the Bucs led much of the game, the Lady Wranglers never allowed them to pull away. With Blinn’s struggles on the boards, the team wasn’t able to feed the ball in transition.

“We like to have teams that rebound, and right now we aren’t the best rebounding team,” Jenkins said. “But I think every game they’ll get more comfortable.”

BUCCANEER MEN

Buccaneers storm past Houston Community College

Through five games, no team has been able to slow down the Blinn men’s basketball team’s blazing hot offense.

Houston Community College fell victim to its potency Saturday at the Blinn P.E. Building as the Buccaneers won 122-83.

The game marked Blinn’s fifth straight of scoring at least 111 points or more.

“We’ve got everybody out there contributing as much as they can,” sophomore point guard Jacoby Green said. “We came out there and played hard and played together.”

The Bucs used a pair of 3-pointers and two dunks by sophomore Macari Brooks to build an eight-point lead in the opening minutes. The Eagles slowed down the Bucs’ high-powered offense for a time, though never long enough to pull the game close. By the 8:25 mark in the second half, Blinn had built a 40-point, 97-57 lead.

The Bucs hit 10 threes on the night.

Eddie Alcantara scored 15 points for the Bucs, Jalan McCloud scored 11 and Roderick Harris and Cornell Barnett each scored 10.

“We’re trying to do what Coach says instead of doing our own thing,” Brooks said, who finished with a game-high 27 points. “What he’s been telling us has been working, so we need to keep listening to him so that he can get us to where we want to go.”

Through the season-opening six-game winning streak, Blinn coach Scott Schumacher is seeing the team improve.

“They’re starting to grasp what we’re asking of them on offense and defense,” he said. “We have a lot of offensive weapons and we share the ball well.”

The Bucs have a chance to extend their winning streak to seven games Monday night against Victoria College at 7:30 in the P.E. Building.

“We’ve just got to keep playing together,” Green said. “As long as no one gets selfish, we’ll be all right.”
