The Buccaneers beat Indian Hills 4-1 and Pasco-Hernando Community College 11-1 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic Friday.

Blinn plays LSU-Eunice, the No. 1 team in NJCAA Division II, at 11:30 Saturday morning for a chance to advance to the tournament’s gold bracket.

“We’ve been talking about consistency a lot lately, and while we’ve came out the first day of tournaments firing on all cylinders, we have to continue that the next day—in this case, all weekend,” Blinn (15-4) coach Rick Church said.

Consistency wasn’t an issue Friday for the Bucs.

At the plate, Blinn scored 15 runs on 15 hits in the doubleheader and freshman pitchers Jaiden Rawls and Mariah Gibson combined to give up two runs on five hits. Rawls struck out nine batters against Indian Hills.

With the Bucs holding a 2-0 lead, Rawls got some run support from sophomore Taylor Guidry who hit a two-run single in the fifth.

Against Pasco-Hernando, Rawls crushed two home runs on her way to a 2-for-2, four-RBI showing.

Sophomore Peyton Webb was 2-for-3 with three RBI against Pasco-Hernando and Marissa Purcell was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Freshman Delilah Pacheco was 3-for-3 with two runs scored against Indian Hills.

The big test of the tournament, Church said, is seeing how the Bucs will respond heading into Saturday and Sunday’s play. The Bucs close out pool play against LSU-Eunice before advancing to either the gold or silver bracket.

“We can’t beat ourselves,” he said. “If we don’t do that, we stand a good chance at winning.”
