CAMPTOWN CEMETERY TO GET HISTORIC MARKER

A genuine, but not well known bit of history will be unveiled next Saturday, March 22nd, when the Buffalo Soldiers along with the Washington County Chamber of Commerce will unveil the Historical Marker for the Camptown Cemetery.

Eddie Harrison of the Buffalo Soldiers says they have been doing what they can to rehabilitate the old cemetery near the Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church.  Harrison says the burial site began as a slave cemetery but later received veterans of the Civil War and Buffalo Soldiers.

Harrison says because so many veterans of wars long past are buried at the Camptown Cemetery the Rolling Thunder Patriot Guards and the Buffalo Soldiers will continue the restoration and clean up there.  Harrison says then the cemetery will be noted for its impact on local history.

The unveiling of the Historical Marker of the Camptown Cemetery will be Saturday, March 22nd at 1pm, about one thousand yards from the Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church at 204 Kerr Street.
