CANNERY KITCHEN WORKERS GET CERTIFIED

Like so many businesses, the Cannery Kitchen in Brenham, is looking to strengthen its workforce through advanced training and the Blinn College A.W. Hodde Jr., Technical Education Center provided the solution for them.

Cannery Kitchen employees Bill Hughes, Ron Harris, Thomas Wayne Davis, Carolyn Henderson, Elisha Lison and Sherry Rogers have been certified in the Food Handler’s Certification Program hosted by Blinn College.  This is a 16 hour course that teaches basic food safety techniques, as well as personal hygiene, dangers of cross-contamination and proper kitchen sanitation.

Technical Center Director David Yeager says this was the first class of newly certified food service workers and he says all of them learned their new skills where they worked, at the Cannery Kitchen.

The Cannery Kitchen is run by Faith Mission, a local non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance to those in need and teaches its employees lifelong career skills.

The Food Handler’s Certification Program got its start in February when Mission Director J.D. Young and Deputy Executive Director Randy Wells approached the Hodde Center about beginning a certification program.  The course is taught by John McGonagill, the food service manager at the Brenham State Supported Living Center.

Yeager said the program is available to local businesses who would like employee training or individuals seeking food service training.

Certification gives job seekers an advantage over their competition, according to Lawrence Greer, the Cannery Operations Director.
