CENTRAL TEXAS POLICE SERGEANT SENTENCED FOR PLANTING DRUGS

A one-time Madisonville police sergeant has been sentenced for planting drugs on suspects.

A jury in Brazos County convicted Jeffrey Convington of retaliation  this week.  Covington will receive probation and serve 30 days in jail, plus he will give up his peace officers license.  The verdict came after he made a deal with prosecutors , that allowed for other drug charges and official oppression charges to be dropped. .

The charges stemmed from a custody dispute with his wife, Laura.  She  was charged with drug possession after a November 2011 traffic stop.  Investigators says Jeffrey Covington arranged for a police informant, who later cooperated  with prosecutors, to put methamphetamines under his ex-wife’s vehicle. Charges against her were dropped.
