In Brenham, students will be attending classes for the first time at a brand new school and another that has undergone extensive renovations.

Students will be in classrooms in the new Alton Elementary School and in the completely renovated Brenham Middle School.  The two projects cost a combined $26-million and have been under construction for nearly 18 months.

Both projects came right down to the wire and each has minor items that need to be finished, but BISD officials say those final projects will not affect the students and their classes.

Brenham Superintendent Sam Bell says the district is projecting approximately 4,900 students for the opening of classes.

The Burton School District also opens for classes today (Monday).

Burton Superintendent James Palmer says he expects an increase in students over last year, with increases in both the elementary and secondary schools.

Palmer says Burton has also made numerous facility improvements over the summer.

Palmer says the teachers will have new laptops. There’s also new paint and floor tile in the high school classroom building, and new security cameras installed in all the hallways.
