COUNTY HOLDS PUBLIC HEARING ON ROAD REPAIR GRANT

Washington County Judge John Brieden told a public hearing on creating a County Energy Transportation Reinvestment Zone, that one oil or gas well along a county road is the equivalent of eight million cars using that road.

The public hearing at today’s (Tuesday’s) special New Year’s Eve meeting of the County Commissioners was to get public input on creating such a zone in Washington County.  Judge Brieden told the County Commissioners during the hearing that overweight trucks used in oil field activity cause incredible damage and now the Texas Department of Transportation has $225 million for repairing those roads.  Under a TxDot formula, Washington County could get $283,203.

Precinct Four County Commissioner Joy Fuchs said that much of the oil field activity happened in her precinct and the county needed to go after the funding.

Precinct Three County Commissioner Kirk Hanath gave some conditional support to the plan but express concerns that the proposal was vague.

People in Washington County now have 30 days to submit their comments on the creation of a CERTZ.   That’s why the County Commissioners needed to hold a meeting on New Year’s Eve. The grant application must be submitted to TxDot no later than February 14th.
