CUBETTES TAKE DISTRICT OPENER

The Brenham Cubettes’ defense of their 2012-13 District Championship couldn’t have gotten off to a better start, as they scored the first 23 points en route to a 55-30 win over Magnolia West.

The Cubettes (6-1/1-0) used their swarming defense to create a slew of early turnovers that led to a 19-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Cubettes, ranked number-seven in the TABC pre-season poll, opened up the 2013-14 District 18/4A season at Magnolia West, just two weeks into the season.

Angel Darcus led the Cubettes’ early charge with eight first quarter points, many coming off of steals and drives to the Lady Mustangs’ basket.

Meanwhile, the Cubettes’ twin towers of Teaira McCowan (6’8”) and Alencia Woodberry (6’4”) forced Magnolia West to launch shot after shot from the outside, and limited the Lady Mustangs to just one shot nearly every time down the floor.

Magnolia West finally got on the board about 2:00 into the second quarter, on a jumper from Skye St. Rose, but the Cubettes continued their onslaught, taking a 37-11 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.

Darcus had 13 points at the intermission, whild McCowan and Woodberry had eight points each.

The Cubettes stretched their lead to as much as 32 in the second half as Coach Chante’ Crutchfield inserted a slew of reserves and rested most of her starters.

Darcus would lead all scorers with 20 points, while Woodberry added 11 and McCowan finished with 10.

Alex Simon led the Lady Mustangs with 14 points.  She was the only Lady Mustang in double-figures.

The Cubettes return to district action Friday night when they host Waller at 6:00 at the Brenham High School Gymnasium.

In other 18/4A openers, Tuesday night:  Montgomery 67  Huntsville 15; Rudder 67  Magnolia 41; Willis 55  Caney Creek 44; Waller was off.
