CUBS’ DEFENSE AND SPECIAL TEAMS POWER WIN

The Brenham Cubs’ offense barely worked up a sweat Friday night as the Cubs’ defense and special teams spearheaded a 55-10 win over Caney Creek at Cubs Stadium Friday night.

The Cubs (9-1/8-0) ran just two offensive plays in the first quarter, but had a 28-0 lead after the first 12 minutes of plays.

It was the defense that got Brenham on the board first.  Caney Creek took the opening kickoff and marched down the field behind the Wildcat formation.  But after a quick timeout by the Cubs, Ryan Nunn scooped up a fumble and raced 60-yards for the score.

After the defense held the Panthers (2-8/1-7) to a three-and-out on their next series, Desmond Lockett took the Caney Creek punt just shy of mid-field, followed a wall of blockers, and sprinted untouched, 54 yards for a touchdown.

When the Cubs’ offense finally got their hands on the ball, they had it for less than a minute.  On first-down, Earnest Patterson ran 30 yards to the Caney Creek 34.  On the very next play, Tyler Watts took an inside handoff and went the final 34 yards to give the Cubs a 21-0 lead.

The Cubs’ defense came up big again as safety James Homan intercepted a Jonathan Gordon pass and returned it 42-yards for another touchdown.  The cubs would lead after first quarter 28-0, despite just two plays on offense.

Brenham would extend that lead with three more touchdowns in the second quarter.  Quarterback Caleb Hill hit the speedy Malik Wilson with a 29-yard scoring pass.  The 5’8” 140-pound sprinter, used his brawn to fight his way through three defenders for the final seven yards.

Ja’Michael Adams extended the Cubs lead to 42-0 with a  one-yard touchdown dive.

After a 25-yard field goal got the Panthers on the board, the Cubs closed out the first-half scoring with an 8-yard bullet pass from Hill to Tre’vonte Johnson gave the Cubs a 49-3 halftime lead.

By the half, the Cubs’ offense had run a total of 18 plays with 11 for first-downs.

The game was, for all intents and purposes, put away on the opening kickoff of the second half when Earnest Patterson took the kick 80 yards for a touchdown.  That gave the Cubs a kickoff return, punt return , interception return and fumble return, all for touchdowns.

Patterson finished the night with 88 yards rushing on just four carries.  While Adams ran for 70 yards on 10 rushes.  Hill completed 4 of his 5 passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

The win put the finishing touches on the Cubs’ fifth consecutive district championship and sends the Cubs into the Bi-District round of the Region III/4A Division II playoffs against Georgetown East View.

The Patriots earned their school’s first-ever playoff berth with a 47-31 win Friday night over Hutto.
