CUBS DROP FIRST DISTRICT GAME SINCE 2009

The Brenham Cubs’ run of 32 consecutive district wins came to an end at Tully Stadium, Friday night, as Stratford upended the Cubs, 56-31.

Stratford’s offense riddled the Cubs’ defense for 526 total yards—370 on the ground, led by Rakeem Boyd who rushed for 273 yards and three touchdowns.

Boyd got things off to a great start for Stratford, as he raced 55 yards on the first play from scrimmage to give the Spartans (3-3/3-0) a 7-0 lead, just 19 seconds into the game.  It was the third time this season an opponent has scored on the Cubs on the first play from scrimmage.

Boyd added to the Spartans’ lead just over three minutes later with a 9-yard touchdown run.

Ernest Patterson, who scored all four of the Cubs’ touchdowns, got Brenham on the board with a 56-yard punt return.

Patterson would finish the night with 275 yards and three rushing touchdowns of his own.  However, each time the Cubs (3-3/2-1) would score, Stratford would counter with a touchdown of its own.

Freshman quarterback Mark Murdock guided the Spartans’ offense, completing 8-of-14 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown.  He also rushed for 51 yards and two touchdowns.

Cubs’ quarterback Caleb Hill completed just nine of 22 passes for 112 yards and threw two interceptions.

The loss was the first in district play for the Cubs since November 6th of 2009, when they fell to Waller, 15-14 in the 17/4A finale.  The Cubs went on that season to play Aledo in the State Championship game.

For Cubs’ head coach Glen West the game was not about district championships or winning streaks, but gauging where the Cubs are as a team.

“For what we want to get done, it hasn’t changed.  We just need to get in there and figure out what we’ve got to do to get better and if we get a full dedication from our players and coaches, we’ll get it fixed.  And we can fix it beginning next week.”

“We didn’t play well at all, and that starts with me and our coaching staff,” said West.  “We had a plan and we thought it was good, but it turned out to be a terrible plan.  It was a poor performance.”
