CUBS EDGE MONTGOMERY–ZACH BARNES SUFFERS HEAD INJURY

The Brenham Cubs remain the only undefeated team in District 18/4A as they defeated their arch-rivals, the Montgomery Bears, 3-2 at Firemen’s Park Friday night.

The Cubs’ win was marred by a horrifying injury during pregame warm-ups.

Starting second baseman Zach Barnes was struck in the back of the head with a throw ball.  Barnes was taken to Scott & White Hospital for examination then flown by helicopter to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston for treatment.

Montgomery (4-1 in district) took the early lead with an unearned run in the first inning, but the Cubs quickly countered in the bottom of the first when Teddy Hoffman doubled in Jacob Stegent.

Brenham (9-6/4-0) took the lead in the second.  Caleb Hill led off with a double, then two batters later he scored on a sacrifice fly by Blake Paschal.

Sam McElreath led off the Cubs’ third inning with a walk.  He scored on a two-out double by Dakota Brewton.

That’s all starting pitcher Blake Wellmann would need as he only gave up one more run—a solo homer by Collin Garrett.

Hoffman came on to pitch a perfect seventh for his first save of the season.

Wellmann (3-0) gave up just one earned run on five hits and struck out nine.

The Cubs will be back in action Saturday afternoon with a 4:00 game at Bryan Rudder.
