CUBS FOOTBALL PREPARING FOR 2014 AS DISTRICT FAVORITE–AGAIN

The 2014 high school football season is just around the corner.  Two-a-days are scheduled to begin Monday, August 4th.

In Brenham, the Cubs are coming off a 2013 season that saw them playing for the 4A State Championship, December 21st in Dallas.

As always, expectations are running high for what has become one of the most consistent programs over the past 10-to-15 years.

Now, the Cubs move up to the newly-reclassified 5A—which, for all intents and purposes, is the new 4A.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine has picked the Cubs to win their sixth-straight district championship (19/5A in 2014-15) and have the Cubs pre-season ranked #7 in the state in 5A.

Brenham head coach Glen West is entering his 17th season at the helm of the Cubs’ program, and says everyone is anxiously awaiting the start of two-a-days August 4th

West says that while the Cubs are coming off a great 2013, they’re facing a clean slate, with a lot of work to do before the 2014 season gets underway…

The Cubs have some outstanding players returning, including record-breaking running back Ernest Patterson.  Patterson (the Dave Campbell 2014 4A Coverboy) ran for 2,439 yards in 2013, breaking the 41-year old single-season record set in 1972 set by Cleveland Franklin.  Patterson also scored 27 touchdowns—24 rushing, two receiving and a kickoff return.

Patterson ran for over 200 yards in a game three times and twice topped the 300-yard mark; including a 339-yard effort against East View in the opening round of the playoffs.

Also returning is starting quarterback Caleb Hill, who completed 61-percent of his passes (143-of-246) for 2,523 yards and 23 TD’s.

Among other returnees are the explosive Walter Thomas, fullback Jordan Graves, offensive lineman Dalton Nutt, defensive linemen Dejuan Ramirez and Alfondrick Bennett, linebacker, Tre’Markes Smith, defensive back Deon Earls and kicker Tien Pham.

West says the returning players and their willingness to become leaders will be a huge part of any success the Cubs reach in 2013…

In February, the UIL re-classified the schools, moving most 5A programs into the new 6A classification—then moving most 4A’s (including Brenham) up into 5A.

They also adjusted Brenham’s district (now 19/5A) by adding Tomball, Tomball Memorial, Stratford and Spring Woods to Brenham, Magnolia, Magnolia West and Waller.

The move also puts Brenham back into an eight-school district which means a return to the schedule that allows three pre-district games and a bye week before district play.

West says that is crucial to the preparation for the 2014 season…

The Cubs will open their season Friday, August 29th at Houston Lamar.

The district 19/5A opener is Friday, September 26th at Tomball Memorial.

As always, all games can be heard on KWHI and www.kwhi.com with the Sports Doc Ed Pothul and Kyle Van Hook.
