CUBS ROLL, 12-1 IN BI-DISTRICT OPENER

The Brenham Cubs made a strong early statement in their Bi-District playoff opener at Georgetown Eastview, Thursday night.

That statement was made by Cubs’ rightfielder Teddy Hoffman, who ripped a three-run homer, staking the Cubs (20-9) to a lead they’d never relinquish en route to a 12-1 win and a one-game to none lead in the best-of-three series.

Cubs’ starter Blake Wellmann (6-0) was overpowering on the night, limiting the Patriots (12-10) to one unearned run on just two hits and striking out 10.  After giving up a second-inning run, Wellmann would retire the next 13 consecutive Eastview batters.

“Blake had a huge night ,” said Cubs Head Coach Lanny Williams.  “He was a little rocky in the second inning, but once he settled down, he was unhittable.  He spotted his pitches really well.”

The Cubs busted the game wide open in the fifth inning.  Leading 4-1, Jacob Stegent singled in Sam McElreath.  Stegent scored on Hoffman’s double.  Dakota Brewton singled in Hoffman, extending the Cubs’ lead to 7-1.

Hoffman would supply the fireworks again in the sixth with another three-run blast, giving the senior outfielder three hits (two homers) and seven runs batted in.

Rayne Richard would make it back-to-back Cub homers with a shot of his own.

Williams said he thought Hoffman was in for a big night, “He had great BP’s (batting practices) all this week.  He’s really been ripping the ball.  He’s a team leader and really stepped up and led the team tonight.”

The Cubs take their one-game-to-none lead into Saturday’s game-two at Blinn’s Leroy Dreyer Field.  If Eastview wins game-two, game-three will follow about 30 minutes later.
