CUBS TAKE GAME-1 OF REGION QUARTERFINAL, 11-4

The Brenham Cubs drew first blood in the Region Quarterfinals against Kingwood Park, Thursday night.

The Cubs rolled to an 11-4 win at Firemen’s Park behind another explosive hitting performance, flawless defense and gutsy pitching.

Brenham extended their lead with a three-run third, highlighted by Sam McElreath’s fourth home run of the season.

Kingwood Park (24-12) cut the Cubs’ lead to 5-2 with a run in the fourth on Zach Keller’s groundball out; and another run in the fifth on an rbi-single from Cameron Perez.

The Cubs, however, put the game out of reach with a two-run homer by Hoffman (7) in the bottom of the fifth, followed by four more runs in the sixth.

Ryan Newman, playing with a sore hamstring, ripped a two-run single I the sixth followed by Hoffman’s second double which drove in his fourth run of the night.

Blake Wellmann (8-0) battled for six-and-a-third innings to get the win.  The junior right-hander gave up nine hits, but struck out nine as he continually stranded Panthers’ runners—many of those in scoring position.

The Cubs and Panthers will square off in game two, Friday night at 7:00 at Kingwood Park.

The game can be heard live on KWHI and www.kwhi.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30.
