CUBS WIN OPENER IN ROUND ROCK

The Brenham Cubs left little doubt they’d put Tuesday’s season opening loss behind them, as they erupted for eight runs in the top of the first and cruised to a 9-3 win over Stony Point, in the opening round of the Round Rock Hardball Classic.

The Cubs (1-1) opened the game with back-to-back singles by Jacob Stegent and Zach Barnes.  They scored on back-to-back rbi-singles by Teddy Hoffman and Sam McElreath.

Caleb Hill then made an immediate impression with a two-run triple in his first-ever at bat for the Cubs.

After Dylan Lester drove home Hill, starting pitcher Dakota Brewton launched a two-run homer.  Jaquay Cross, who reached on a Tiger error, scored on Barnes’ rbi-single.

Stony Point responded with two runs in their half of the first, but never threatened the Cubs’ early lead.

Brewton went six innings to pick up the win, while slamming a second home run in the third inning.  He gave up three earned runs on four hits and struck out five.

Sam McElreath pitched a scoreless seventh.

The Cubs will face Leander at Leander, Friday at 1:00.  Friday at 7:00, the Cubs will face Round Rock at Dragon Diamond.  The Dragons are ranked number-two in the State 5A Pre-season poll.

Saturday, the Cubs will return to Stony Point to face Highland Park at 10:00 and Houston Memorial at 1:00.  Both Saturday games can be heard on KWHI.
