EIGHT YEARS FOR DRUG POSSESION

A Somerville man, caught with a multitude of illegal drugs during a traffic stop in March was sentenced to eight years in prison in this week’s session of the 21st district court.

Judge Reva Towslee-Corbett handed down the sentence after Donald Edward Francis pled guilty to the charge.

Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Mertz stopped Edward Francis  in the 2800 block of highway 290 west just before midnight on March 20th.

Francis was a passenger in a pickup truck  pulling a trailer when Deputy Mertz made the traffic stop because of a defective taillight. A check discovered Francis was wanted on a warrant for driving while an invalid license and arrested him.  The arrest led to a search of the truck and the discovery of significant amounts of illegal drugs, including methamphetamines, hydrocordone and cocaine.

The deputy also found a bag of synthetic marijuana in plain view.

Sheriff Otto Hanak said that Francis had enough illegal drugs that he could have been charged with a first degree felony.  The charge was reduced to a second degree felony by the time court was in session Tuesday. Judge Corbett sentenced Francis to eight years in prison.

A Brenham woman who left her two-year old daughter locked in a hot car in June was sentenced to two years probation.

Twenty-three year old Sabrina Ann Midkiff  left her child in the back seat of her car when she went into the Brenham Chili’s Restaurant that night.  She was going to talk to the child’s father but the conversation lasted longer than she expected.  That was long enough for a concerned person to call Brenham police.

Judge Corbett sentenced Midkiff to two years deferred adjudication, fined her $750, and ordered her to perform 100 hours of community service.
