FIREWORK WARNINGS FROM STATE INSURANCE AND FIRE MARSHAL

A week from now, the skies will light up with wonder as Americans celebrate their nation’s birthday with fireworks.  There are several major shows set for the surrounding area, including the 15th annual Fireworks on the Fourth at the Washington On the Brazos State Park, on the Fourth of July.

There is of course, some concern.  Many put on their own fireworks displays, risking injury and fires.

The Texas Department of Insurance reports that in 2012, there were more than 800 fires caused by fireworks.

State Fire Marshal Chris Conneealy says that even sparklers burn at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit.

He has some safety reminders.  You should follow the law, contactyour local law enforcement officials for more information on burn bans and to find out which fireworks are legal in your area.

You need to have responsible adult supervision, do not consume alcohol if you plan to shoot off fireworks.  Use your fireworks on a hard, flat and level surface, purchase fireworks only from licensed and approved dealers and do not point or throw fireworks at people.  Always keep a bucket of water ready to put out any unintentional fires.
