HEMPSTEAD SCHOOL PRINCIPAL LET GO AFTER SPANISH ANNOUNCEMENT

The Hempstead School Board voted not to renew the contract of a principal who instructed students not to speak Spanish on campus. .

Hempstead Middle School Principal Amy Lacey was placed on administrative leave in December after reportedly announcing on the intercom that students were not  to speak Spanish on the school’s campus.  The Hempstead School Board voted Monday not to renew her contract.

The Hispanic population of the district has been rapidly growing in recent years along with the number of Hispanic students in the district.

The district received numerous complaints, including one from the League of United Latin American Citizens.  They are taking their protests a step further.   The long standing civil rights organization along with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund are seeking a federal investigation into the incident and how Hispanics are treated in the district in general.

Hempstead School Supt. Delma Flores Smith says she hopes ‘everything will die down now and get back to peaceful living and education. ‘
