JUNETEENTH CELEBRATED IN BRENHAM
A celebration of freedom was held this past weekend in Washington County with the celebration of Juneteenth.
The Weekend’s activities kicked off with a dance Friday at Firemen’s Park with Raa Raa and the Zydeco All-Stars.
Saturday’s events got underway with the annual Juneteenth Parade in downtown Brenham.
The Grand Marshall of the parade was former Pickard High School coach and teacher Lorenzo Cole.
Cole coached taught history and coached, Baseball, Football, Basketball, and Track at Pickard. He was a part of the coaching staff in 1962-63 when Pickard High School won back to back State Baseball Championships.
The 2014 Juneteenth Royalty was also honored.
The Junior Queen was Ashley Moore and the Junior King was Ryan Johnson. Both are eighth graders at Brenham Junior High School.
Ashley Moore is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Moore. Ryan Johnson is the son of Sherisse Martin.
The Senior Royalty this year was Queen Alea Henry, a senior at Brenham High School, and JaMarcus Turner, a senior at Bellville High School.
Alea Henry is the daughter of Rev. Lincoln and Maxine Williams. Turner is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Marcus Turner.
The weekend concluded with a host of activities at Firemen’s Park.
Next year will mark the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth.
