LUMBERTON ENDS CUBETTES PLAYOFF RUN

The Brenham Cubettes’ exciting run in the Region III/4A playoffs came to an end Tuesday night.  Lumberton ended the Cubettes’ season, 3-0 in the Region Quarterfinals in Conroe.

The Lady Raiders (21-1-3) got on the board first.  In the game’s ninth minute, Shea Mitchell found Kennedy Hardy with crossing pass that Hardy buried in the Cubettes’ goal.

The Cubettes (17-6-4) were able to stay within 1-0 throughout the rest of the first half, despite Lumberton controlling the pace and flow of play for most of the half.

Less than six minutes into the second half, Mitchell put the Lady Raiders up 2-0 when she took a pass from Tayler Montelaro and fired it to the right of a diving Cassie Musser.

The Cubettes played a more aggressive and inspired second half, with several scoring opportunities, but the Lumberton defense was able to keep Brenham off the scoreboard.

The Cubettes’ best scoring opportunity came when a shot by Angel Darcus slipped past Lumberton goal keeper Lauren Scarborough, but defender Macie McFarland blocked the shot just inches from the goal line.

Mitchell added a late goal with just two minutes left to cap the scoring at 3-0.

Lumberton advances to the Region Semifinals, Friday against Friendswood (winners over Ridge Point, 2-1).

The other semifinal will pit College Station against Spring Woods.  College Station defeated Port Neches-Groves, 2-0; while Spring Woods downed George Ranch, 1-0.
