As expected, the University of Texas Board of Regents last (Tuesday) night named Admiral William McRaven the sole finalist for the chancellor of the UT System.

The Regents unanimously selected McRaven, a Navy Seal, as the next chancellor.  But it won’t become final until they take a vote to officially appoint him at their August meeting.

The 58 year old McRaven was the director of the special forces operation that took down Osama bin Laden in 2011.  Since then, McRaven has commanded the 66,000 special operations forces in the military from MacDill Air Force Base in Florida.  From San Antonio, McRaven earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from UT-Austin before starting his military career.  He will retire from the military August 28th.

Current chancellor, Francisco Cigarroa, plans to step down in December to lead the pediatric transplant team for the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio.
