NEW LAW COULD MEAN ROAD MONEY FOR WASHINGTON COUNTY

Washington County Judge John Brieden says recent changes in the Texas Transportation Code, regarding the creation of a County Energy Transportation Reinvestment Zone, could mean over $283,000 coming into the county coffers.

The Washington County Commissioners will hold a special New Year’s Eve meeting today (Tuesday) at the courthouse that will begin with a public hearing on the changes in the transportation code.  Judge Brieden says one provision deals with taking money from the state’s rainy day fund for road repair.  He says the number of overweight limits for trucks carrying heavy oilfield equipment that damage county roads is the major factor in the funding.

Judge Brieden says that unlike most public hearings, the Code changes will take 30 days to enact so they can form a group to monitor the funds.  The judge says this does not involve in hike in county taxes.

The Washington County Commissioners are meeting this morning (Tuesday) at 9am at the courthouse.
