RELIEF IN SITE

Washington County Commissioners have given the go-ahead for the next step in helping improve the sanitation woes for an area of the county that has been seeking relief for nearly a decade.

Commissioners gave County Judge John Brieden approval to sign the contract for a Department of Agriculture Bloc Grant to finally help a group or residents off Old Chappell Hill Road in Precinct-One.

According to Brieden, the $277,750 project would allow the county to connect sewer lines from the city’s system to this group of mostly-low income homes outside the city limit.

Brieden say the area is too small for more septic tanks and that has caused a continuous problem.

That problem was first addressed by former Precinct-One Commissioner the late David Simpson, and has been continued by current Commissioner Zeb Heckmann.

Brieden says this is a huge sanitary issue, "They will be required to do this, and then we'll disable the septic tanks so they'll not be used anymore."

"This will improve the lives of those folks out there and make sure what's going on right now won't continue."

The next step will be establishing the requirements for engineering and administrative firms for the project.

The County will be required to pay one-percent of the value of the grant.
