SALES TAX REBATES UP AGAIN

  

The state comptroller’s office announced today (Wednesday) that the city of Brenham saw a 3.87 percent increase in sales tax rebates in the month of May from this time last year.

State Comptroller Susan Combs released figures saying the city of Brenham received $499,068 in sales tax rebates last month.  That was up from the $486,458 in rebates from May of last year.  The city saw a slight decline from this time last year.  The city has received $2.9 percent in sales tax rebates for the year so far.  That was a 2 percent decrease from the first five months of last year.

The sales tax rebates for the city of Burton were up.  That city received $3717 in sales tax rebates for the month of May, up from the $3598 in sales tax rebates from May of last year.  Burton was also up in the year to date rebate by 14.5 percent.

Washington County is also getting more sales tax rebates from the state.  The County received$212,800 in the latest reporting period.  The County has received $1.2 million so far this year.  Washington County has received $193,000 in total sales tax rebates in May of last year.. That is a .3 percent increase from the first five months of last year.

Comptroller Combs announced that her office distributed $622 million in sales tax rebates to local government statewide in May.

She reported that the total sales tax revenues for the state in May was $2.45 billion, up 8.5 percent compared to May of last year.

She said this growth was due to retail and wholesale trading.
