SANTA FE DOWNS CUBS IN SEASON OPENER

Santa Fe erupted for four runs in the first inning and spoiled the Cubs’ season opener, 6-4 at Firemen’s park, Tuesday night.

A one-out three-run homer got the Indians on the board just four batters into the game.  A double and single followed to increase the Cubs’ deficit to 4-0.

The Cubs knotted up the game with four runs in the fifth inning.

Jacob Stegent drove in JaQuay Cross with a double.  Ryan Newman drove in Stegent with a single.

A Santa Fe error led to two Cub runs, tying up the game at 4-4.

However, in the top of the sixth, Santa Fe strung together two hits and two walks to take the lead back, 6-4.

That lead would hold up as the Cubs fall to 0-1.

Ryan Newman led the Cubs offensively with two hits, a run and an rbi.

The Cubs will be back in action this weekend at the Round Rock Hardball Classic.

Thursday, the Cubs will face Stony Point on the Tigers’ home field at 1:00.  The game can be heard on KWHI and www.kwhi.com, beginning at 12:40.

Friday, the Cubs will play Leander at Lion Field at 1:00 and Round Rock at Dragon Diamond at 7:00.

Saturday the Cubs will return to Stoney Point to face Highland Park at 10:00 and Houston Memorial at 1:00.  Both games can be heard on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
