SENIOR AGGIE LINEMAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULT

  

Twenty-one year old Gavin Stansbury, a senior defensive lineman for the Texas Aggies was accused of pouring a beer on a man and punching him the face when he was on the Rice University campus in March.  The man received eight stitches  and another woman was grazed by Stansbury fist in the incident.

Stansbury and two others were arrested on warrants after a traffic stop in College Station late Tuesday night.

Three witnesses picked Stansbury from a six person photo array, and one told police  Stansbury had identified himself as a Texas A&M football player who was transferring to Rice.

Stansbury told Rice police however, that he had not been on the Rice University campus in several years and was not on campus between March 15th and 16th, when the incident was reported to have happened.  The assault is a class A misdemeanor.

Also arrested in the late Tuesday night traffic stop were Aggie football players Howard Matthews and sophomore wide receiver Edward Pope.  These two all had misdemeanor warrants.  Pope was the driver of the car.

This is the latest in a series of arrests of Texas A&M footballs lately., Seven players have been arrested since February.

Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations Alan Canon released a statement saying the department is continuing to gather information about the arrests and was unaware of any transfer request from Stansbury.
