SHERIFF HANAK: NO ORDER TO STOP TRAFFIC TICKETS

Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak says the priority of his office is to protect the lives and property of the people in the county.

The Sheriff said “our people are here to catch criminals and not traffic law enforcement.”  Sheriff Hanak says he never told any of his deputies not to write traffic tickets, however.

Hanak said it is the primary function of the Texas Highway patrol is to enforce traffic laws.  He said further that he spent 13 years with the Highway patrol enforcing traffic laws.

Hanak said the Sheriff’s office issued 1066 traffic tickets in 2013 and gave 1000 traffic warnings. He told his deputies to use common sense in traffic law enforcement.

  1. I agree, Bill. I’d much rather have the sheriff’s deputies out on the county roads. Patrolling. And there are a lot of roads out here.

  2. What do you know, a law enforcement officer who understands his duty to protect people, not generate revenue throught the court system. It is nice to hear a common sense approach to enforcement of these laws. Good job Sherriff.
