TRAIN DERAILMENT IN GRIMES COUNTY SHUTS DOWN HIGHWAY

A tank car carrying a hazardous but non-toxic chemical derailed at 6:13 this (Monday) morning,  about a mile south of Navasota causing the overpass on highway 6, over highway 105 to be shut down for several hours.

Chief Grimes County Sheriff’s Deputy Todd Green said that while the chemical, called DEA, is not toxic, it’s “not something you want to breathe.” The chemical is used to remove hydrogen sulfide from natural gas.  Reports from the Grimes County sheriff’s office says up to 73,000 gallons of the chemical were spilled.

The tanker car was one of eight train cars involved in the derailment,  Green said they were fortunate because the area was lightly populated and that no one was injured.  He said they have yet to determine the cause of the derailment.

Hazardous Materials teams from Brazos County were called to the scene for the cleanup.  The Texas Department of Public Safety was called to control traffic as it was detoured  to highway 90 and FM 1227.  Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell says they will have to assess the damage done to the roads.
