TWO GRIMES FATALITIES MAR THANKSGIVING WEEKEND

Two Grimes County fatalities Sunday marred what had been a safe Thanksgiving traveling weekend.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reports  an Austin woman was killed on Highway 105 at about 1:22  Sunday afternoon.

DPS Trooper Jimmy Morgan says 26-year old Anna Penz was dead at the scene after a 2002 Ford Explorer, driven by 46-year old Marcelino Moreno-Rosenco, traveling eastbound, struck the pickup truck that Penz’s husband was driving.  Matthew Penz, the husband was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Regional Hospital and Moreno-Rosenco was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.

Witnesses told troopers that there may have been another vehicle involved.  This accident is still under investigation.

A 20-year Houston student was killed Sunday night on Highway 6 about a mile south of Navasota when he slammed into the rear of an 18-wheeler at a speed of nearly 100 miles per hour.

Reports from the DPS say the tractor-trailer was crossing over into another lane on the highway at about 9:21pm.  The   tractor trailer driver, 53-year old Adolfo Beittie was waiting for the traffic to clear in the northbound lane and the back end of his truck was still in traffic in the southbound lane.  A report from the DPS says ‘for some unknown reason’  Marcus Johnson, the student driver of an older model Yukon,  changed lanes and struck the trailer, going at least 98 miles per hour.  Johnson was declared dead at the scene.
