TWO MORE FORMER CUBS DRAFTED, SATURDAY
Two more members of the 2010 Brenham Cubs State Championship baseball team were selected Saturday in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.
Former Cubs shortstop Drake Roberts, an infielder at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, was taken by the 29th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Former Cubs pitcher Chase Wellbrock, a relief pitcher at the University of Houston, was selected by the Totonto Blue Jays in the 33rd round.
Roberts hit .289 in his junior season at St. Mary’s with five doubles and three homers. He scored 27 runs and drove in a team-high 33.
With the Cubs, Roberts was a three-time All-State selection and was an All-American his senior year.
Drake is the son of Donnie and Elaine Roberts.
Wellbrock was 5-0 this season for the Cougars, with 12 saves and a 1.17 ERA. His 24 career saves are an all-time Houston record. He was also named 2014 Houston Cougar Male Athlete of the Year.
In 2010, he was an All-State selection, 4A Player of the Year and State Tournament MVP while setting a single-season record by going 18-0 for the Cubs.
Chase is the son of Kenny and Sandy Wellbrock.
Friday afternoon, their 2010 Cubs’ teammate Seth Spivey was selected in the 10th round by the Texas Rangers.
Last season, second baseman Erich Weiss was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates and is currently playing at West Virginia in their minor league system.
