TXDOT SURVEY COULD MEAN HIGHER SPEED LIMITS

Brenham City Manager Terry Roberts says that the Texas Department of Transportation has done a survey of highway 290 since the massive renovation project concluded, and they think it is time to increase the speed limits on the stretch of the highway going through Brenham.

Roberts says city staffers and members of the City Council want to have a closer look at that proposal before they agree to the increases.  The City Council will take up the speed limit increases during the work session of Thursday’s meeting.

TxDot is proposing increasing the speed limit from 65 miles per hour to 70 miles per hour from Blue Bell Road to just before the BNSF Railroad, and increasing the speed limit from 60 miles per hour to 65 miles per hour from the railroad to the cloverleaf.  Roberts says this comes after a new traffic survey.

Brenham Police Chief Rex Phelps has some concerns about the increase because there have been 19 accidents on the highway in Brenham in the past year.

Phelps says he will address the concerns during Thursday’s meeting of the Brenham city council.  The Brenham City Council meets Thursday at one at city hall.
