VOTER ID CONCERNS

  

The new Voter ID law is in effect for the first time during the state constitution election next week.  Early voting is continuing with most places including Washington County having a very light turnout, and no problems.

The Dallas Morning News is reporting however, that the voter’s name on the photo identification requires an exact match listed in voter registration data bases are especially problematic.

Some Texas participating in early voting ahead of the November fifth election have complained.

State officials says that if names are ‘substantially similar’ a voter immediately sign an affidavit verifying his or her identity and vote.

Another option is casting a provisional ballot, then providing supporting information later.

The law requiring a photo identification, including a Texas driver’s license, a concealed handgun license or an election certificate was passed during the 2011 session of the Legislature but was not enforced until this year when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down significant portions of the Voting Rights Act.

Washington County Clerk Beth Rothermel is reporting a very light turnout. There is only one local issue.  The Oak Hill Acres Water District is having a bond issue.

Houston and Harris County voters are coming out in big numbers however, because they are voting for a mayor in Houston, and what to do with the Astrodome in Harris County.

Early voting runs through Friday at the Washington County Courthouse from 8am to five pm.  Election Day is next Tuesday, November fifth.
