WASHINGTON CO. SHERIFF/JAIL MAKE 2014-15 BUDGET REQUESTS

Washington County commissioners have heard requests from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the County Jail for increases in their budgets for 2014-15.

The Sheriff’s Department is requesting two new deputies.

Sheriff Otto Hanak says the additions would drastically cut overtime and would help with enforcement of weights and measures laws involving trucks passing through Washington County.

Hanak says between the overtime and tickets from trucking violations, the new officers and reassignment of responsibilities would likely cover the cost.

The sheriff’s office is also requesting the creation of a new lieutenant position to oversee the day-to-day operations of the office.

The Washington County jail is requesting a new transport vehicle and a set of two washers and two dryers.  Jail officials says they could purchase one washer and dryer each year, and could accept an older sheriff’s office vehicle as long as the mileage was in the 70,000 to 80,000 mile range.

Budget meetings continue as the Washington County Commissioners prepare the 2014-15 spending plan..

  1. Everyone needs to wake the judge and commissioners up. They have got to stop being so tight fisted with money
Washington Co is growing and they need to finance the growth

  2. Living out in the County (Lake Somerville area) and having met a few Deputies here in Washington County, I think the average Deputy needs a raise. I have been reading that many Deputies in surrounding counties are severely underpaid, and I believe ours are no exception. Considering that on any given weekend, there are many out of town people in Washington County visiting either Lake Somerville or the many festivals that we have, I think we need more deputies on staff. This is a really big county with many County Roads to patrol.

I also think that we should pay our deputies a living wage. I would be embarrassed to know that a deputy I may someday have to depend for my safety had to rely on food stamps to feed his family. Personally, I wouldn’t mind paying a little bit more in property taxes to increase the security and number of officers that we have out in rural Washington County.

  3. Why do you people always see the bad in things? Have you looked at some of the vehicles that some of the Sheriff Deputy’s drive? Obviously not…
How would you fell if one of your family members is the one transporting criminals/patients and the car they are driving breaks down on them in the middle of the night, in the middle of no where? Think about that and stop being selffish.

  4. I heard he his giving himself (of course) and all the Investigators raises. Wonder why he left that part out….

    1. I thought the day to day operations was the Chief Deputy’s responsibility? Guess I was wrong. As far as raises I think all the deputies need a raise except the higher up’s. The older vehicle’s should be handed up to the office people and let the patrol guy’s have the newer vehicle’s. Patrol has to be at a scene a lot quicker than the Investigator or Sheriff has to be
