WASHINGTON COUNTY UNEMPLOYMENT RATE UP IN JUNE

  

More people in Washington County are out of work this month than last.  However, the current jobless rate remains ahead of last year.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, Washington County’s June unemployment rate stands at 4.6-percent—an increase of 6-tenths of a percentage point over the May rate of 4.0-percent.  The current rate, however, is still well below the June 2013 rate of 5.7-percent…a drop of 1.1-percent.

The state-wide seasonally-adjusted rate currently held steady from last month at 5.1-percent—and is down 1.3-percent from last year’s June rate of 6.4-percent. Texas’ unemployment rate remained below the nation’s June unemployment rate of 6.1-percent.

All the surrounding counties also report increases in their jobless rates.

In Austin County the rate is 5.1-percent, up 2-tenths from May.  The Burleson County rate is up 5-tenths at 4.6-percent.  The rate in Brazos County is up 6-tenths at 4.5-percent.  The Grimes County rate is up 6-tenths at 5.3-percent.  In Lee County the rate is 4.2-percent, up 5-tenths.  The rate in Waller County is up 7-tenths at 5.7-percent.  The Fayette County rate is up 4-tenths to 3.7-percent.

Seven of the 11 major industries in Texas showed employment increases over the month, led by a rise of 7,700 jobs in Trade, Transportation, and Utilities. The industry added 90,400 jobs over the year as its annual growth-rate reached 4.0 percent, the highest in the industry’s recorded history.
