WINTER WEATHER WATCH FOR WASHINGTON AND SURROUNDING COUNTIES

6:30AM UPDATE

We are starting to see black ice form on our roadways in all ten counties of the Bryan District.  Travel is discouraged.  For roadway conditions check out www.drivetexas.org or call 1-800-452-9292.

Sleet, ice and freezing rain can create extremely dangerous driving conditions, which is why the Texas Department of Transportation strongly advises drivers to stay off the roads as much as possible. If drivers must be on the road, please remember to:

  • Reduce speed
  • Increase following distance
  • Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses
  • Stay back at least 200 feet from vehicles treating roadways
  • If you start to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes and steer in to direction of skid
  • Avoid unnecessary travel

A winter storm watch has been issued for Washington, Austin, Burleson, Grimes and Waller Counties as another major cold front is expected to move into the area.

The National Weather Service is predicting  temperatures will be dropping throughout the day with wind chills dropping into the 30s throughout the day.

The bigger concern is the precipitation.  The National Weather Service says  wintry precipitation is coming with this front that could mean ice on area bridges  and overpasses.

The Blue Bell Aquatic Center will be closed Friday but will re-open on Friday. The Nancy Carfl Roberts Library will open at noon pending weather conditions.

Schools in Somerville, Snook and Burton will begin their classes two hours later at 10 am.

The Burton junior high school basketball game has been cancelled.

There are even reports of a chance of snow overnight.  That chance will diminish by Friday morning.
