18 WHEELER CRASH KILLS ONE AND INJURES THREE NEAR SALADO

An overpass in Bell County that was under construction crashed down on Interstate 35, killing one person, and injuring three others.

The beams of the overpass under construction at FM 2484 in Salado crashed down after a northbound tractor-trailer hit the bridge at around 11:30am due to the truck being too tall to clear the overpass, according to TXDOT.

The crash caused a 10 miles backup, which caused rural back roads to be crowded as drivers tried to navigate around the wreckage.

A wrecked pickup and another rig lay in the southbound lanes for hours.

TXDOT says it did not know the height of the truck, which was carrying a piece of equipment in its bed similar to a bucket truck.

The man who was killed was in one of the two pickups involved after one the tractor trailers involved jackknifed. The three injured person were all taken to the hospital.

The accident was originally reported as a bridge collapse because it was part of a multi-million dollar TXDOT project, involving widening I-35 from four to six lanes, but TXDOT refutes that story, confirming that the bridge collapsed due to the truck hitting the overpass.

TXDOT has not yet said how much the damage in Salado could cost.
