2016 WASHINGTON COUNTY FAIR “BIG SUCCESS”

Fair officials are calling the 148th edition of the Washington County Fair a big success.

The fair ended its week-long run Saturday night with a large crowd turning out for the finale featuring headline entertainers, the Eli Young Band.

This year’s attendance was slightly above last year’s numbers.  A total of 50,225 people passed through the gates – 200 more than the 50,025 that attended last year’s fair.

Outgoing fair president Pam Zwahr posted on Facebook that the fair, “…was a huge success” and thanked the hundreds of volunteers.

The fair kicked off last Saturday night when Carli Conway was named Fair Queen.  Conway raised an individual record $86,540 by selling 3,462 tickets.

The four queen candidates broke the group sales record, selling 6,651 tickets, raising $166,266.

Dawson Dreahn and Riley Meier were the fair’s Junior Mr. and Miss.  Luke Alford and Bailey Brown were named the Little Mr. and Miss.

The Junior Livestock Sale saw eight records fall, including the Grand Champion Steer, which sold to a group of 19 buyers for $30,000.  The Reserve Champion Steer sold for $29,000.

The auction brought in a total of $690,000.

Over 30 special needs youths participated in the Champion Drive Livestock Show Friday morning.  The event raised over $15,000 from sponsors.

Also at this year’s fair, KWHI and KTEX-106 set up the ‘Wagon Wheel of Prizes’ to collect funds to help rebuild Goodwill Baptist Church of Washington.  A total of $611.75 was raised for the effort.

Zwahr ends her two-year run as fair president.  The president for the next two editions of the Washington County Fair will be David Wellmann.
