CUBETTES HOOPS OPEN SEASON WITH WIN AND LOSS

The Brenham Cubette basketball team opened up the 2014-15 season with a win and a loss at the Dripping Springs Lady Tiger Tournament.

In the opener the Cubettes could not completely erase a 19-point halftime deficit and fell to Smithson Valley, 54-48.

The Lady Rangers led 18-11 after the first quarter, and extended that lead by outscoring the Cubettes 16-4 in the second quarter.

Brenham fought back, out-scoring Smithson Valley, 33-20 in the second half, but eventually fell by six points.

Senior post Teaira McCowan led the way with 14 points and 18 rebounds, while sophomore forward Alicia Jackson finished with 12 points.  Shameria Armstead and Keauna Bimage each added seven points.

In the night-cap, it was the Cubettes who had to hold off a hard-charging Hays Consolidated for a 57-55 win.

Brenham built up a 52-41 lead after three quarters.  But Hays outscored the Cubettes, 14-5 in the fourth quarter to close within two.

McCowan led all scorers with 24 points and added 13 rebounds.  Jackson finished the game with 20 points, while Armstead added seven points and Bimage pulled down eight rebounds.
