290 SPEED LIMITS BEFORE THE BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL AGAIN

The Brenham City Council will have another round of discussions about possibly raising the speed limits on U.S. Highway 290, when they meet this (Thursday) afternoon at city hall.

The proposal from the Texas Department of Transportation met with skepticism from some on the City Council and from Brenham Police Chief Rex Phelps, when it was first presented at the Council’s October 3rd meeting.

City Manager Terry Roberts said TxDot did a speed survey after the completion of the 290 project and determined that the speed limit should be raised from 65 to 70 from FM 577/Blue Bell Road to the BNSF railroad tracks and 60 to 65 from the railroad tracks to Business 290 west at the cloverleaf.

Many on the Council, at least one citizen at the meeting and Police Chief Rex Phelps expressed concerns about the speed limit increase. Phelps said 158 accidents have occurred on that stretch of the highway in the past two years and it was not advisable to raise the speed.  Mayor Milton Tate was concerned about the number of 18-wheel tractor trailers overturning at the cloverleaf.  City Councilman Danny Goss said he would ‘hate to see’ a speed limit increase.

The Rev. David Ottsen of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church told the council that the higher speed limits would make 290 a ‘racetrack.’

The City Council will have another work session on the matter at today’s (Thursday’s) meeting, then vote on it during the regular session.
